- Wero is live for bunq users in the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Belgium, enabling users to pay and get paid across borders straight from the bunq app
- The neobank is the first to complete rollout of eCommerce and person-to-person payments across all four markets
- At bunq Update 32, the neobank also announced it had surpassed €10B in deposits, and the launch of up to a €5,000 credit limit on its globally-accepted credit card
Amsterdam, 22 September 2026 — bunq, Europe’s second-largest neobank, today became the first bank to make Wero available for both person-to-person payments and online purchases in the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Belgium. bunq users across all four markets can now use Wero to send and receive money with Wero’s quick and secure transactions, directly in the bunq app.
Wero, by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), brings together disparate national payment systems under one unified solution. It offers a seamless, secure ecosystem built around the needs of European users and businesses, replacing iDEAL, GiroPay, Paylib, Payconiq, and living alongside other existing payment systems.
Using just a phone number, bunq personal and business users can send money to anyone in the participating markets. They can also select Wero at checkout on participating merchant sites, paying straight from their bunq account with no card details required.
Joe Wilson, Chief Evangelist at bunq, said: “Everything we do has the goal of making money easy, safe and secure for our users. With Wero, we saw the opportunity to invest in a system that will remove friction for our users, enabling payments for how Europeans actually live, rather than legacy infrastructure that stops at the border.”
Martina Weimert, CEO of EPI, added: “bunq’s progress in implementation is helping extend Wero to a new, digital-first user base. By enabling cross-border transfers through Wero, bunq users gain access to a simple and secure payment experience with Wero’s ecosystem of 60 million users and counting.”
The announcement comes from bunq Update 32 at the DeLaMar theater in Amsterdam, where bunq introduced up to €5,000 credit limit on its globally-accepted credit card - for users in the Netherlands, Germany and Spain - as well as the neobank surpassing €10B in user deposits.
bunq, Europe’s second-largest neobank, has built the first user-centric bank. By developing a product rooted in its users’ wants and needs, bunq makes life easy for location-independent people and businesses, starting from the way they manage money: how they spend, save, budget and invest. As the world’s first GenAI-powered bank, bunq offers its users safe, secure and simple 24/7 financial support—user-centricity at scale.
Pioneering many things considered impossible, bunq was the first bank to get a greenfield European banking permit in over 35 years, raised the largest series A round ever secured by a European fintech (€193 million), and was the first EU neobank to achieve structural profitability. As part of its mission to build the first global neobank, bunq has also received its US broker-dealer license and applied for its Mexican banking license, with more global expansion to follow. Based on instant account-to-account (A2A) payments, Wero further streamlines payments in Europe by eliminating intermediaries in the payment chain and the associated additional costs. Wero already supports payments between individuals, and will shortly unveil payments to professionals (P2Pro). Wero has been live for P2P payments in Belgium, France, and Germany since 2024, currently serving 59 million users. For retail payments, Wero is live in Germany since the end of 2025 with progressive rollout in France and Belgium throughout 2026. Major migrations of at least 15 million consumers are also planned for Payconiq in Luxembourg (by 2026) and iDEAL in the Netherlands (by 2027). Point-of-sale payments will also be offered in 2026, as well as value-added services such as integration of merchant loyalty programs and recurring payments and subscription management.
