  • Tricount users have split almost €16.4 billion last year, with travel, transport and groceries topping the list of most popular categories
  • Travel dominates the charts as the top shared expense, surpassing even everyday grocery shopping with €3,1 billion globally
  • December 30th marks busiest day of the year with 90,468 tricounts created, indicating a trend of people taking proactive steps to get their finances in order before the new year

Amsterdam, January 30, 2025 - Tricount by bunq, a global go-to app that automates group expense tracking for nights out, holidays, and housemates, published its first annual wrap up, tallying users’ shared expenses in 2024.  This analysis is based on the spending habits of nearly 16 million users across 175 countries.

Shared travel beats groceries: €3.1 billion split globally

Tricount's latest data reveals that in 2024, travel took the lead as the most split expense among groups, surpassing groceries, rent, and gifts. A remarkable €3.1 billion was divided among groups globally, with an average of €167 per person spent on shared travel costs. Whether for summer vacations or weekend getaways, the trend highlights a growing focus on shared experiences and group adventures.

In second place, Tricount’s data shows that groups are increasingly splitting transportation costs, having shared a total of €2.5 billion in 2024, with an average split of €134. From long-haul flights to weekend drives, people are increasingly dividing transportation costs, making it easier and more affordable to enjoy trips without breaking the bank.

Groceries only takes third place among the top spending categories - showcasing that groups clearly favour spending money on shared experiences rather than household essentials. Tricount users split a total of €2.1 billion this category last year with an average of €114 per split.

August is peak month of group spending

The top 3 categories have one thing in common: summer is prime spending season. As temperatures rise, so do travel, transport, and grocery expenses, with families and friends making the most of their time off. Whether it's sun-soaked vacations, road trips, or city breaks, August stands out as the peak month for group spending. That month alone, Tricount users split €456 million on travel, €376 million on transport, and €294 million on groceries - showing that summer adventures aren’t just about expenses - they’re about creating unforgettable memories together, with everyone contributing their fair share.

While not in the top 3, activities like dining & drinking out and sharing rent and utility costs are also significant. These categories totaled nearly €2 billion each in 2024, with both seeing a summer spike in July and August - driven by vacation getaways, subletting apartments, and students securing housing for the start of the new semester.

Record spending in the year-end

Latest Tricount data also shows that, as the year comes to a close, people are taking proactive steps to get their finances in order before the new year begins. Whether it’s proactively splitting the finances for all festive celebrations, travel, gift-giving or preparations for New Year’s Eve celebrations – throughout the month of December people are becoming more financially conscious. Against this backdrop, December 30th, 2024, was the busiest day of the year, with 90,468 tricounts created - helping users split a whopping €79.3 million in shared expenses for New Year’s Eve preparations, ensuring they start the new year without financial confusion or stress.

Bianca Zwart, Chief Strategy Officer at bunq observes: “What we’ve learned from our users is simple: it’s not about the small details of group expenses, but about the experiences and memories we create together. When we spend less time stressing over the details, we can focus on enjoying the moment and make memories that last.
